Cyber Essentials (CE) is a self-assessment and external scan of public-facing IPs, whereas Cyber Essentials Plus (CE+) requires an added, more rigorous technical audit by our accredited assessors, including internal vulnerability scans and user testing to verify controls are working, providing a significantly higher level of assurance.

The scheme focuses on firewalls and internet gateways for network separation, secure configuration to remove defaults, user access control (including mandatory MFA for cloud services), malware protection to stop malicious software and security update management (patching).

Both Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certifications are valid for exactly one year from the date of issue, and annual renewal is mandatory to ensure your security controls keep pace with evolving threats and to maintain your certification status.

There is a 3-month time limit for completing both the CE and CE+ certification process.
