We thoroughly enjoyed delivering a joint workshop with Keith McDevitt and Davd Ferbrache OBE from the Cyber Resilience Unit in the Scottish Government at the IoD Scotland Annual Conference 2019.

“The Institute of Directors and other business organisations are absolutely vital in making sure we are doing what is necessary to build a strong, sustainable, growing economy. The Institute of Directors is a critical friend of the Scottish Government, giving us advice on the things that we should be doing and the things that perhaps we shouldn’t be doing. And we value that because it helps us to make sure that we get those policy interventions right.”Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister

Our workshop centred on real-world security risks and the tools you should use to reduce risk and offer a positive solution that will ensure you sleep soundly at night.

It was Klaus Schwab, the executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, that said we are now entering the fourth industrial revolution. During this great period of technological transition, when we are seeing the increasing incorporation of AI into our business models, it is important that we take a moment to consider how to:

While it is easy to be captivated by these new advances but we should remember to take a measured consideration of what new threats and vulnerabilities might be present.

At the moment there is a lack of effective education and awareness about the security issues that come with new technologies. The overall impact and consequences are not always fully considered and risks can slip through the cracks.

Factors like corporate IP, having confidence in the security of your current software/hardware and educating staff on how to use public Wi-Fi in a way that doesn’t harm the business were some of the key takeaways from our workshop.

“Delegate feedback was overwhelming with most learning that it takes more than IT for modern day security and that Directors now have many ‘hidden’ accountabilities. The tools for Directors and boards from the Government, The NCSC and Net-Defence were warmly received and delegates left feeling empowered with tangible steps to take that reduce risk.”Joanna Goddard, Net-Defence
