Neil Smith

ISO, IASME, GDPR are just some of the many acronyms that Neil can assist you with.

Neil is our Governance, Risk and Compliance consultant who has experience in a myriad of ISO standards particularly ISO 27001/IASME and GDPR as a qualified internal auditor he has played a major role in obtaining industries the certification standard. Having served 35 years in the RAF as a Telecommunications specialist and IT Manager he has experience in various Microsoft windows platforms including installation of various operating systems, and is a Microsoft Certified Professional in Windows XP. After leaving the RAF worked in the government sector for a while as a problem and incident specialist gaining experience on the Service Now platform and cloud technology, progressing into the security and change management arena. In addition to this he is a qualified project manager with PRINCE 2, ITIL and LEAN certifications, also has experience in AGILE and SCRUM and has been involved in major multi-million pound projects involving the deploying of large IT networks and ISDN/Gamma telephone systems.

Telecoms and Network Support

Ben Parry

Ben is the go-to person for our hosted projects.

Ben joined the team in November 2012 as a data and fibre cabling engineer but quickly found himself trained installing on premise Samsung and Shoretel telephone systems.
As telecoms has moved forward Ben has developed his training further by undergoing training within hosted telephony and is the main installation engineer and go to person for hosted projects.
Ben assists with the telecoms and network services support teams when he is not out on the road

Leanne Anderson

Even after 10 years at Net-Defence, Leanne loves working as part of a team.

Leanne started with Net-Defence in March 2012 as an Admin Assistant. Leanne now works in accounts team, processing daily invoices and paying our suppliers. Leanne loves being part of the ND Team and always looks forward to the next team night out or activity.

Technical Specialist

John Wright

John has 20 years of experience from ISDN through to IP Telephony.

John with Comtec in January 2000 as an apprentice mainly doing cabling, cat5e, cat3 and fibre.

He began installing phones system in early 2001 after quickly picking them up, old analogue, digital ISDN phone systems. In 2005 VoIP phone systems started to advance and IP telephony was the future, John completed several courses and he learnt quickly to adapt.

In 2007 Ogilvie Communication (now Net-Defence) bought Comtec, Net-Defence brought an IT team that allowed John to work closely with to further develop of IP telephony deployment.

John has worked on projects for large clients which further advanced his knowledge including cabling, IP phone systems, IP CCTV and IP door entry systems. With over 20 years in the industry, John is one to rely on.

Jennifer heads ups the Net Defence finance team. Jennifer joined the Ogilvie Group in 1998 originally working within Construction accounts department for 10 years before joining Net Defence. During this time she has seen and been part of great changes within Net Defence, gained her ACCA qualification and aged significantly!

John Hay

Managed Service expert and whisky connoisseur. John can bring proactive IT support to your business.

John joined the Net-Defence team in 2018 bringing over 25 years of experience with him and is a big hit with our clients. His ability to explain complex IT products and processes in simple, understandable language has helped many businesses improve their security and obtain Cyber Essentials certifications. More recently he has expanded our product range to include IASME Governance and Counter Fraud Fundamentals, ensuring small and medium businesses keep up a high standards with their GDPR and Data Protection journey.

Clients utilising our Managed Service Provider (MSP) offering have benefited from the work John has done to introduce our Remote Management and Maintenance (RMM) product. Using N-able to provide a proactive support experience rather than a reactive, issue resolving service. Uptime increases, customer service and satisfaction improved, and our customers are more efficient and informed. Anti-Malware, off site backup, network monitoring, patch management, email security, ticketing and remote assistance are all available in a single, easy to use console.

John is a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA) and CREST Practitioner Security Analyst (CPSA). These qualification are obtained by demonstrating knowledge of assessing the security of computer systems by looking for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems, using the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker, but in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security of a system or network.

John has also studied a degree in Microbial Biotechnology, NVQ in Paramedic Science and ScotVEC in table tennis (level 2). It is a shame there is no formal qualification in sarcasm. He has worked in pharmaceutics, communications, hospitality, retail and as an MSP. He owns a small business buying and selling whisky and can be frequently found touring Scotland looking for new and exciting bottles. Samples are always well received in our office!

Dean Oxnard

Dean has over a decade of IT experience from VMWare to helping one of the largest IT migrations in Europe.

IT engineer with over a decade worth of experience working within the IT industry in various levels of support and project deployments. I have worked in various levels of support for both internal and external users/clients for a number of companies, as well assisting with one of the largest IT migrations in Europe back in 2018 for DXC technology.

I have worked and supported various technologies throughout my career that range from various backup solutions, windows server, exchange, Hyper-V, VMware and storage solutions to name a few. As well as supporting I have also been involved in various software and hardware deployments such as anti-virus, backup hardware/software, archiving facilities, servers and desktops. I am always looking to get hands on with new technologies and meet any challenge head on, which my current role as technical support specialist with Net-Defence allows me to do.

Having worked for Net –Defence for over twenty years, I have extensive experience in helping customers and businesses alike understand the solutions required for their business.

I am part of a Nationwide team that provides expertise and customer-service support for clients to help them improve their value and security. Our portfolio includes IT Installations and Managed Services, Cyber Security, Structured Cabling, Telephony, Mobile, Data and Voice solutions. Within this team, I specialise in IT Infrastructure Solutions , IT Software Licensing and Customer Services, always keeping the client’s best interest at heart. Our customer base is UK wide, ranging from sole traders and SME’s, through to Third Sector and Public Sector organisations.

Simon Richardson

Over two decades of telecommunications experience. Si has come a long way from dial-up routers.

Simon joined Net Defence way back in 1998 giving him over two decades worth of telecommunications expertise.

He has seen many changes within the telecommunications sector throughout his career and learned to develop and adapt his skill set with the very latest technology throughout his time with the company.

Back in the beginning, where everyone had analogue lines and dial up routers, ISDN was the future. Now ISDN is nearing its end and SIP Trunks and Hosted VoIP Telephony is at the forefront of the Telecommunications Industry, Simon is always keen to make sure that he has the best of technical knowledge to support every customer need.

Starting as a telecoms engineer and learning to understand our customer needs, he now is the Telecoms Supervisor within Net Defence, always making sure our customers have the very best response and technical support possible. Within this team Simon specialises in keeping our customers businesses up and running on a daily basis with the very best engineers in the business.

Out of work he is a keen football supporter and family man.

Craig Hester

"Chester" - 25 years of IT knowledge and loved by all ❤️

Craig sent us a small bio for this section, he really undersells himself. In addition to managing a team and supporting 500+ staff across our group of companies during COVID-19, Craig also visited the Scottish Air Ambulance to help keep them operating during the crisis.

Craig has been in IT for over 25 years with extensive knowledge of Microsoft technologies, network and infrastructure design along with project and IT management. He's worked in financial, public, private and manufacturing sectors, fulfilling roles from system support to design, implementation and project management of complex infrastructure and network designs. Craig leads our team of support and telecoms engineers supporting a wide variety of clients and all of Ogilvie Group businesses across a broad spectrum of technologies.

Network Services and IT Resources

Justine Wallace

From Accounts to Telecoms, IT to resource scheduling, Justine helps keep Net-Defence working at optimum capacity.

Justine joined Net-Defence March 2018 as a credit controller. This was initially temporary but this was made permanent in July 2018 at which point she moved to become our Telecoms Billing Technician.

Justine is very adaptable and her role has evolved several times since. In December 2019 she moved to into a Network Services and IT Provisioning role working alongside Craig Hester within the IT department. Justine is also taking on more of role in our scheduling and resources management.

Amanda Turnbull

From six-week work placement to Customer Services Manager. A reflection of how we invest in our colleagues.

Amanda originally joined the Net Defence team in 2006 on a six-week placement as part of her NVQ Level 1 course. Amanda’s skills and work ethic were quickly recognised and a permanent position was offered. Fast forward 14 years, Amanda has completed her NVQ Level 3 in Business and Administration is now our Customer Service Manager.

Amanda also oversees the order processing department making sure we meet internal and external customers’ expectations. Amanda is often referred to as the “go-to person” by both customers and colleagues alike, always friendly, approachable, and ready to help.

Outside of Net Defence, Amanda loves to travel and always has an adventure or two booked with friends and family.

Martin Thompson

From Data Engineer to Installation Supervisor, Martin has been with us for over 20 years.

Martin has been part of the team for over 20 years. He started out as a data and fibre engineer, before progressing to the Installation Supervisor, where he excels at project management. He has relished taking on numerous projects which have taken him to many different countries. He also advises and supports clients with infrastructure design, passing on his vast amount of knowledge and expertise, while building up excellent customer relations.
